Case Overview

While breast reconstruction often requires two or more stages, there are instances in which it is possible to achieve a complete result after a single surgery. Violet was a candidate for nipple-sparing mastectomies. Her body type also allowed for immediate DIEP flap breast reconstruction. While a second stage surgery may have offered some improvements, she was content with both her reconstructed breasts and abdominal donor site after just one surgery.

This patient had all the conditions necessary to perform bilateral mastectomies with immediate DIEP flap breast reconstruction in a single surgery.

Early post-op
A single surgery produced good contour and symmetry in both the reconstructed breasts and abdominal donor site. A small skin island of the DIEP flap inserted into the incision along the breast fold for postoperative flap monitoring was removed in the office 2 weeks after her surgery. The patient elected not to proceed with any revision of the reconstruction.

Violet had a stable long-term result which maintained good contour while her scars matured and faded.
