Nipple areola tattooing is a deeply impactful element of breast reconstruction after mastectomy. It offers a sense of completion where other elements of reconstruction fall short. Tattooing has notable psychological benefits. Patients report increased satisfaction with their overall reconstructive outcome and sense of restoration. Unfortunately, many patients who have completed the reconstruction process are denied the opportunity to undergo this final step. In some cases, insurance does not provide coverage for the procedure. In others, coverage is inadequate, leading to exorbitant out-of-pocket costs.
In order to expand access to this emotionally restorative procedure, we are thrilled to announce the launch of our Nipple Areola Tattoo Access Fund in partnership with Pink Aid Long Island. This program offers one-time grants for nipple areola tattooing to patients in Nassau and Suffolk Counties who demonstrate financial need. Its regional pilot initiative comes with great thanks to a Pink Aid Long Island 2025 Grant, which will support its initial run. Are nipple areola tattoos really that important?
Breast reconstruction patients endure countless challenges from the moment of diagnosis to mastectomy to breast reconstruction and sometimes beyond. Breast reconstruction itself is almost always a staged procedure, which means that patients must persevere through multiple surgeries over long periods of time. It can take over a year or more to reach a “final” breast reconstruction where both patient and physician are satisfied with the result. Nipple areola tattoo represents a light at the end of that tunnel. More than an aesthetic improvement, it is also typically undertaken when a patient and their team are confident that the surgeries are at an end. It is a final touch, the seal on the envelope that holds the whole reconstructive chapter. Patients take their tattoos into their new lives. These intimate markers of reconstructive completion offer a deeper sense of restoration, helping patients move forward.
Who qualifies for the program?
This initial program run is available to patients in Nassau and Suffolk Counties on Long Island. In order to be eligible, patients and providers must be within those counties. Patients must also demonstrate financial need via documented income that is below three times the federal poverty limit. Finally, patients must choose a specialized provider. Body art tattoo artists (i.e. standard tattoo artists) are not eligible. Funds are only available to providers with restorative tattooing credentials. How does it work?
The grant application is simple. Interested patients should first confirm that they meet the regional and financial requirements. That financial information will be part of your application. Once it’s confirmed, schedule a consultation with an accredited provider. If you like the provider, let me know you’ll be applying for a grant from us, make an appointment for a procedure, and ask for an invoice that includes the procedure date, a copy of their credentials, and contact information. After all that is in place, you’ll send the financial, procedure, and provider information to us alongside some demographic information, and we will let both you and the provider know once we make a determination!
