What Do I Ask My Doctor? Getting Started History of Reconstruction Immediate vs. Delayed Reconstruction Radiation and Reconstruction

Can I have implants if I had prior radiation, or need future radiation?

Breast reconstruction using tissue expanders and implants is much more difficult in the setting of radiation, but it is not impossible. The risk of complications is much higher when there is radiation. Specific problems such as capsular contracture and wound infection are much more likely. In some cases a flap is required to salvage a radiated implant reconstruction.
