How long will I be in the hospital?

The type of surgery you have will dictate the amount of time you will need to be in the hospital. It is important to remember that every patient is different, and you may need to remain in the hospital for a longer period of time than you initially anticipated. The hospital stay for a mastectomy with tissue expander placement is usually one to two days. For a mastectomy with a latissimus dorsi flap reconstruction, the hospital stay should be one to three days. The hospital stay for abdominal flap reconstruction, and GAP or other free flaps, is generally three to seven days. Most exchange surgeries, revisions, and nipple reconstruction procedures are performed as outpatient surgery, and you should be resting in the comfort of your own home within hours of the operation.
